Beach Options in Southern Bali

As well as being the most developed area of the island, and housing the widest range of accommodation, the most beautiful beaches in Bali are thought to be located in the south. Below is our guide to the various options available – let us know which you think suits you!

Sanur

Located around the southeast corner of Bali is Sanur Beach, the island’s oldest and most traditional resort area. Sanur has much more of a village feel compared to the louder beaches over on the west coast, and with its gentle blue waters, overhanging palm trees, and good quality accommodation is invariably our first choice of location in the south.

Bukit Peninsula

An oval-shaped nub dangling off the southern tip of Bali, the Bukit Peninsula is ringed by steep limestone cliffs, at the base of which you’ll find a series of isolated, highly attractive small beaches. Padang Padang, Sulaban, Balangan, and Bingin beaches are all among the most picturesque in Bali. Minimal facilities and tricky-to-reach locations all add to the charm.

Nusa Dua

On the other side of the peninsula, Nusa Dua is Bali’s largest resort area. It’s home to the island’s biggest hotel developments and caters mostly to family groups who like to have everything they need onsite. Continuing the family theme, the coral reefs immediately off Nusa Dua are an excellent exploration site for novice snorkelers

Jimbaran Bay

Jimbaran Beach is located immediately adjacent to Bali Denpasar International Airport. Don’t let this put you off though, the long sandy beach is one of the best in southern Bali, and houses some of its finest luxury accommodation. Jimbaran’s beachfront warungs (local restaurants) are famous for serving divine seafood and cold drinks, often accompanied by gorgeous sunsets.

Kuta

Kuta Beach is known to be the brashest and busiest in Bali. It’s here you’ll find the greatest concentration of cheap and mid-range accommodation, mostly catering to a younger, rowdier clientele. Think water sports by day, and pumping nightlife after dark. It’s not everyone, but for some – it’s heaven!

Seminyak

Continuing up the western coast, Kuta rolls into Legian Beach, which then becomes Seminyak. A 5km strip of white sand, Seminyak beach is similarly hedonistic but it’s a classier affair with more luxurious hotels and swanky see-and-be-seen bars. Seminyak is definitely our pick for those who want the best accommodation, and nightlife to match.

Canggu

Continuing up the western coast, Legian rolls into equally youthful but more laidback Canggu. Canggu is known for its surf scene, and you’ll find a typically relaxed atmosphere here. Echo Beach is the center of the scene, with its juice bars, remote working spots, and trendy accommodation. In contrast to the white sand beaches elsewhere, the coast from here on in becomes alluring volcanic black sand.
