A destination where romantic moments can be discovered around nearly every corner, it’s no surprise that Croatia is becoming one of the world’s top countries for a honeymoon. With a dramatic coastal setting, hundreds of islands, centuries-old palaces, cobbled streets for memorable strolls, ancient wonders to marvel at, and countless opportunities for tasty authentic cuisine, many couples who’ve fallen in love for a lifetime end up falling in love with this country too. Where to Go in Croatia

  • Istria

The Istrian Peninsula is filled with beauty and has a noticeable Italian influence. In fact, it’s been compared to Tuscany with its vineyard and olive tree-covered hills. Hilltop towns like Motovun not only provide panoramic views of the landscape below stretching all the way to the Adriatic but the chance to enjoy a wealth of delectable local foods. In the forest below Motovun, rare truffles are found and often used in a variety of dishes as well as products like cheese and honey. Places like romantic Rovinj make a great base with its enchanting Old Town, cobbled streets, and waterfront resorts and hotels.

  • Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik and its walled Old Town is one of Croatia’s most romantic destinations, long a popular spot among honeymooners. You can even walk atop the medieval walls enjoying views together of the sea and nearby islands on one side, with the red-tiled roofs of the historic center on the other. Along the marble-paved streets are historic palaces and landmarks like Europe’s oldest still active pharmacy dating back to the 14th century, along with intimate bars, enticing cafes, and restaurants offering everything from casual to fine dining. You’ll find some impressive hotels right within the walls or just steps away, adding to the romance factor.

  • Vis

For unspoiled island bliss, Vis Island is known as the “Mediterranean as it once was,” having been closed to the public for 40 years while used as a military base. Today it offers a remote and peaceful stay with postcard-perfect beaches tucked into hidden coves, a fascinating history to explore, and family-run eateries that serve lots of fresh local seafood alongside exclusive island-made wines. For honeymooning nature lovers, it’s hard to beat. Visit Mount Hum for a fabulous view over Komiza town and the entire island, and perhaps take a day trip to the famous Blue Cave, just five nautical miles away.

  • Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes is a national park that’s become internationally famous with its stunning waterfalls and lakes in shades of emerald and turquoise splashed across countless tourism ads to symbolize Croatia’s beauty. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is like a fantasy world and there are multiple hiking trails that wind through lush greenery leading to falls like Mali Prstavac, the “Great Waterfall,” as well as both the Upper and Lower Lakes. You can take a boat ride across Kozjak Lake and enjoy a panoramic journey on a train. Keep an eye out for wildlife like lynx, brown bear, the European wildcat, and wolf.

When to Visit Croatia

The most popular time to visit Croatia is the summer months, with July and August the busiest time of year. If you’d like to spend the majority of your honeymoon sailing, swimming, and soaking up the sun on idyllic beaches, it’s a great time to go. For an island-hopping cruise, the season is generally mid-April through mid-October. You can enjoy mild weather without the crowds in May through mid-June or mid-September through early October, a perfect time for sightseeing. In early autumn, the water will still be warm enough for swimming and you may be able to enjoy some brilliant fall foliage too.
