When it comes to the Okavango Delta, we will tell you that the best way to experience it is to stay in several different areas and safari camps. The reason being is that the Okavango Delta is so vast, and each area is affected by the floods in a different way. The best way to experience the Delta is by doing a mix of ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ activities. Respectively, these include boat safaris and mokoro rides, and game drives and walks. This 9-night itinerary is split between three exceptional and luxurious camps.

The first three nights you will enjoy some of the best game viewing in all of Botswana, at Chitabe Camp. You’ll then fly across to Vumbura Plains to enjoy three nights on the water. The expansive rooms look out to the permanent channel. Finally, spend three nights in one of Wilderness’ flagship camps – Dumatau. We will organize your flights between the camps (or even upgrade to helicopter flights), and ensure that your guiding is up there, with the service and experience you’ll have in Botswana.

    Day by Day Itinerary

    • Day 1 - 3

      Chitabe Camp, Okavango Delta

On arrival into Maun, you will be met and assisted through the check-in process for your short, Cessna Caravan flight into the Okavango Delta. Flying over the Delta is the perfect way to get an introduction to its unique and diverse landscape. The waters from Angola transform the Delta, and flying over it gives you an opportunity to see this at certain times of the year. On landing, you will be met by your safari guide from Chitabe and begin your game drive back to the camp. Freshen up at the luxury lodge and get accustomed to your new surroundings. Each room has a large ensuite bathroom with an indoor and outdoor shower, a private veranda and a small but comfortable lounge area. You will spend three nights at Chitabe, enjoying two safari activities per day (early morning and late afternoon), whilst dining communally with fellow guests in different areas around the camp. This area has fantastic cat sightings, including resident leopard and lion prides.

      Vumbura Plains, Okavango Delta

Fly from Chitabe to your next destination, Vumbura Plains. This camp is famous for its located on the permanent lagoon, and as soon as you walk into the camp, the instantly feel like you on the water. The camp sits in the Vumbura concession, which is owned and operated by the local community in partnership with Wilderness. The benefits of being in a concession is that you have more flexibility when it comes to game drives, and with only a handful of camps in this concession, your safari here will have an element of exclusivity to it. The camp itself really is the utmost luxury and, although there are 14 large rooms, the camp is split into a north and south camp which makes them each smaller and more intimate. Each camp is self-sufficient, with its own team of qualified safari guides, chefs, housekeepers, barmen and a dedicated and friendly team of managers.

      Dumatau, Okavango Delta

You will end your Okavango safari by flying over to Dumatau. Like Vumbura Plains, as soon as you walk into Dumatau, you will feel at home. The main area is designed so elegantly, with expansive views out to the river, and the staff will greet you with genuine, wholehearted smiles. The name ‘Dumatau’ means ‘roar of the lion’ and, with several resident lion prides in the area, it’s certainly a fitting name. Its location in the Linyanti Concession is fantastic, as you can cover huge areas of the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, as well as accessing the Linyanti River floodplain and the Savuti Channel. The game viewing in this area is amazing and there is ample opportunity to see some of the most desired sightings – like elephant, lion, leopard, hyena, wild dogs and more. The rooms each look out onto the river and are made up of a huge lounge and bedroom area, an ensuite bathroom (fit with an indoor and outdoor shower) and a huge private veranda, with its own plunge pool. This is the most unforgettable place to end your Okavango Delta safari.
